Mike Milligan's Bio
Mike Milligan is a prominent local bassist who performs with many of Toronto's finest musicians. He has performed with such internationally recognized musicians as David Liebman, Chet Baker, Ritchie Beirach, Billy Kilson, Adam Nussbaum, David Binney, Don Thompson, Claude Ranger, Holly Cole and Sonny Greenwich. As part of the house band at the Ottawa Jazz Festival in 2005 and 2006, Mike performed with Joshua Redman, Donny McCaslin and Jeff Ballard. He has toured extensively throughout Canada and Europe with the “Shuffle Demons”. With the trio "Life on Mars", he won first prize at an international competition at the renowned Vienne (France) Jazz Festival. In 1997, he recorded his solo bass CD "Solo Flights", which has been well received by jazz fans and critics alike. At the present time, Mike is a highly sought after bassist and performs with many of Toronto's finest musicians. He currently leads his own trio with Juno Award Winner David Braid (Piano) and Joel Haynes (Drums). Mike was nominated as "Jazz Bassist of the Year" at the 2008 National Jazz Awards. Mike has studied double bass with Dave Holland and George Mraz, composition with Roddy Elias, and jazz performance at Humber College. Mike runs a private teaching practice (electric bass, double bass and jazz improvisation) in Toronto.
